Why This Race Matters

Lopez is not up for re-election until November 2027. As the first Latino Democrat in the Virginia General Assembly and founder of the Virginia Latino Caucus, he is a key figure shaping Latino political representation in Virginia. He won re-election in 2025 with 95.5% of the vote, running unopposed.

Lopez co-founded the Virginia Latino Caucus in 2018 alongside Delegates Elizabeth Guzman, Hala Ayala, Patrick Hope, and Jason Miyares. His chairmanship of Agriculture, Chesapeake and Natural Resources was called a historic moment by Speaker Don Scott. Outside the legislature, Lopez works as a Senior Consultant at Becker & Poliakoff in Washington, D.C.

Alfonso Lopez represents District 3 covering Arlington and Alexandria in the Virginia House of Delegates. Born in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, to an American mother of Pennsylvania Dutch heritage and an undocumented Venezuelan father, he made history in 2011 as the [first Latino Democrat elected to the Virginia General Assembly](https://vahousedems.org/members/alfonso-lopez/). He served in the Obama administration as Assistant Administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration, where he led the effort to pass the Small Business Jobs Act. Family & Heritage

Son of an undocumented immigrant father from Venezuela who came to the U.S. seeking a better life, and an American mother of Pennsylvania Dutch heritage who taught and counseled in the Arlington Public Schools system for thirty years. Married to Sarah Mitte Zevin; two children, Aaron and Gabriel.
