Attorney GeneralRepublican

VA-Attorney General Attorney General

Age 50·Cuban-American (mother Miriam fled Castro's Cuba in 1965)·48th Attorney General of Virginia (2022-2026)

Why This Race Matters

Miyares was the first Hispanic American elected statewide in Virginia when he won the AG race in 2021, and the first person to defeat an incumbent Virginia AG since 1885. He lost his 2025 re-election bid to Democrat Jay Jones by approximately 4 points, completing a Democratic sweep of Virginia's three statewide offices.

Miyares' term as AG ended January 2026, when Jay Jones was sworn in as Virginia's first African American Attorney General. Despite the Jones text message scandal late in the campaign, Miyares was unable to overcome the broader Democratic wave in Virginia.
