Pete Aguilar is the Chair of the House Democratic Caucus, making him the highest-ranking Latino in Congress in American history. A fourth-generation Inland Empire resident, he grew up in a working-class family in San Bernardino, started working at age 12 bussing tables with his grandfather, and put himself through college with student loans and federal grants. He became the youngest member of the Redlands City Council and later served as Mayor before being elected to Congress.
