Born in Chicago to immigrant parents — his mother from Colombia and his father from Mexico. Raised by a single mother alongside three sisters in a modest apartment. Worked at a pizza restaurant, construction sites, and a meat-packing plant to help support his family. First in his family to attend college.
Political Career
Before Politics
Worked various jobs growing up including pizza restaurant, construction, and meat-packing plant. After Harvard, enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and deployed to Iraq in 2005 as an infantryman with Lima Company, 3rd Battalion, 25th Marines. His unit lost 22 Marines and a Navy Corpsman in eight months of combat. Served in Arizona House of Representatives from 2011-2014 before running for U.S. House.
