City CouncilIndependent

AK-Assembly District 5 City Council

Age 51·Afro-Latino·Anchorage Assembly Member (District 5, Seat I, 2023-present)

Why This Race Matters

George Martinez is running against Cody Anderson (R, retired Air Force Chief Master Sergeant, associate pastor at Mountain City Church).

Martinez seeks a second term as the first Afro-Latino on the Anchorage Assembly. He won his 2023 race with 56.5%) of the vote. His opponent Cody Anderson is tied to the same church as Martinez's 2023 opponent, and a property tax exemption controversy has become a central campaign issue.

Anchorage uses mail-in balloting with packets arriving mid-March. Martinez previously served as special assistant to Mayor Ethan Berkowitz (2015-2019) and was a vocal critic of Mayor Bronson's 2022 policy of relocating homeless individuals to East Anchorage's Centennial Campground. He ran unsuccessfully for mayor in 2021 (3.7%). Endorsed by The Alaska Center in 2023.

Key dates to watch: General Election on April 7, 2026.
